Zanzibar’s Strategy for Growth and Reduction of Poverty identifies increasing access to clean, safe and affordable water – particularly for the poor and most vulnerable groups – as a key goal. The Zanzibar Water Authority (ZAWA) is the sole clean water supplier in Zanzibar.
ZURA mandate is to control quality and standards of the water ZAWA supplies. This includes:
- Regulating water tariff, fees, charges with the consultation of the Minister
- Controlling efficiency of water supply
- Issuing regulatory water development and supply licenses
